2016 was an important year for us. The organization welcomed new leadership, with Emily Bove becoming Executive Director in May 2016 after having built and grown the Alliance as a Director since 2014. In collaboration with our Board of Directors, our Alliance members, and our supporters, 2016 was the year of new direction and growth. We grew from 200 to 258 members and strengthened our two programmatic pillars: capacity-building and advocacy.
Our Raise Your Voice (RYV) program brought on new online courses based on members’ needs and feedback. In 2016, RYV carried out one-on-one coaching for 20 organizations and trained 36 advocates in 18 countries. In this report, you’ll see how our courses build advocates’ skills and impact their work.
Our Advocacy for Gender Equality program launched the Achieve SDG5 initiative, putting our members on the map of SDG-era implementation and policy-making. Our first global campaign reached 300 grassroots women’s rights and gender equality advocates in 28 countries. We delivered powerful messages to decision-makers at the U.N. and the U.S. government, ensuring that grassroots voices were heard. Our report will give concrete examples of how we made sure women and girls’ priorities reached decision makers around the world.
On top of our programs and services, Women Thrive leveraged the power of movement-building and connected over 150 advocates through its Alliance Online platform. We created online safe spaces of solidarity and exchange to ensure grassroots advocates feel supported, learn from each other, and develop collective action for social and gender justice. Our annual report will show you how the Alliance Online fosters learning, exchange, and action for our members!
We hope you enjoy reading about our work in 2016!
