In April, Women Thrive worked with 38 grassroots organizations around the world on how to have a greater impact for women in their communities.
They participated in our Raise Your Voice online course to learn new skills and strategies. Three months later we checked in to see how they’re putting what they learned into practice.
Chakanesta works at Shamwari Yemwanasikana in Zimbabwe. He told us, “the course paved the way for us to be able to convince policy makers to support our cause and grant us access to reach out to our target beneficiaries.”
Shamwari Yemwanaskikana works to ensure sexual and reproductive health rights in Zimbabwe. Through their advocacy campaigns, they impact the lives of thousands of women and girls.
Shamwari Yemwanasikana joined the Alliance in late 2016. Since taking the Raise Your Voice course this year, Chakanesta shared that they “…managed to raise advocacy in gender inequality hotspots in some of our areas of operation and got the support of the local leadership.”
In addition to short term projects, Shamwari Yemwanasikana developed long-term goals. “As an organization, we managed to come up with an organizational Advocacy Strategy which is still in the draft stage as it awaits the Board’s approval. If it had not been for the course, we would not have that intuition to come up with one!”
Advocacy work and its impact are often not immediate. Advocacy work is a process, and refining and strengthening the necessary skills to make a difference is part of that process. As a result, our online courses are just one of the ways how Women Thrive is working to strengthen women’s rights organizations globally.
